Warehouse security checklist

A working checklist for securing a warehouse, organised by physical, electronic and operational controls. Work it top to bottom and record the evidence for each item; if an item has no evidence, treat it as an open risk, not as an assumption.

Physical security

• Receiving and dispatching areas are physically separated.
• Entrance and exit doors are protected by a physical access control system.
• Vehicle loading uses separate channels from general traffic.
• Security lighting is installed inside and outside the warehouse.
• Manned guards are posted at entrance and exit checkpoints where high-value stock is held.
• Fire equipment is installed at appropriate locations.

Electronic security

• CCTV surveillance covers internal and external activity.
• The security system is integrated with the inventory management system.
• Access control is integrated with surveillance and alarm systems.

Operational security

• A written policy governs trash and scrap removal.
• The warehouse is zoned for security management.
• The outgoing shipping schedule is controlled.
• Vehicles entering and leaving are inspected.
• The security system is reviewed and maintained on a schedule.
• A security assessment compares the location against local crime records.
• Internal staff are interviewed and vetted before hire.
• Security procedures and policies are followed strictly.
• Visitors do not roam the warehouse unsupervised.
• Security measures are customised to the specific site.

Emergency response

• An emergency response plan is documented.
• Employees are trained to act on the plan.
