Field supervision: a working reference

This benchmark is a working reference for planning supervision, not a fixed industry law. The right ratio and cadence depend on your sites, your shifts and the risk you are protecting. It is published only as far as it is backed by clean, dated data — nothing here is asserted as an unsupported average.

The supervision principle

Supervision must be independent of the guard post — the person accountable for what happens at night is not also filling a night shift. Field supervision exists to verify deployment, catch exceptions and document them, so the contract has someone who owns quality rather than a log the buyer has to chase.

How to use it for your site

  1. Plan the ratio from risk, not from a number. A low-ratio site needs more independent supervision than a low-risk warehouse; there is no single ratio that fits both.
  2. Make supervision auditable. Every inspection logged, every exception tied to an attendance or duty record.
  3. Keep the person and the post separate. The supervisor’s role is to verify; if the supervisor is also a required guard, you have no independent check.

Honest scope

This is a reference for planning, and it stays out of the way of a site-specific assessment. Your actual requirement — posts, shifts, sites and the risk you carry — is what determines the supervision you need. We do not publish an average coverage ratio as a fact because no single number is true for all operations.
