Crafting a Security Culture

A security culture is one where everyone in the organisation contributes to security. No amount of investment in physical security works without it — one person let in without permission, or an unsecured reception area, can put the whole organisation at risk.

We make sure people and partners understand the security risks, the physical security policies, and the right security behaviours. We provide security awareness communications, training, and support to build the culture, and we ensure everyone knows the physical security policies.

We encourage people to report potential issues or near misses, and make clear they will be seen as helpful, not as troublemakers.

Knighthood makes sure physical security procedures complement the organisation’s emergency procedures. We give everyone a summary of the emergency and security procedures designed for their safety, including contact details for security and emergency response personnel, and for emergency responders such as the police (dial 100).

We publicise the evacuation procedures for an earthquake, fire, bombing, or an incident involving a chemical or biological hazard. We make sure everyone knows any specific security procedures, such as how to report a bomb threat or suspicious mail, handle aggressive people, conduct interviews, and keep vehicles safe. We also make sure everyone is aware of lockdown procedures that secure information and physical assets.
